Ronnie James Dio - May 18, 2010

I would like to acknowledge the passing of a huge childhood musical inspiration and influence. Ronnie James Dio passed away the morning of Sunday May 16th after battling cancer since last fall. He was 67 years old. RJD was the genre defining vocalist for such Hard Rock and Heavy Metal bands as Rainbow, Black Sabbath (he replaced Ozzy for a few years in 1979), and of course his own band Dio. Ronnie worked with some of the best guitarists in the business. The guitarist on Dio’s first solo record ‘Holy Diver’, Vivian Campbell, was an integral part of my early development on guitar, not to mention Ritchie Blackmore from Rainbow and Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath being huge influences as well. I was lucky to see RJD perform with Heaven & Hell (a re-vamped and re-named Black Sabbath) twice in the last three years. Thanks Ronnie for all the great music! - Alastair

READ an interview with Alastair about his new gig playing with Alan Parsons as well as his thoughts on all things BLUES over at AMERICAN BLUES NEWS! <click there!

AG recieved a review for his most recent CD 'WALKING IN CIRCLES' in the April 2010 edition of Music Connection Magazine with none other than guitar legend Jeff Beck on the cover.

"Greene certainly isn’t reinventing the blues-rock wheel with these recordings, but he sure burns rubber whenever it’s his cue to rip a solo. Whether it’s the Elmore James type stomper, “Walking In Circles”, or the ZZ Top-ish boogie, “Cut You Loose”, Greene’s leads are either impeccably clean or eminently dirty, whatever is called for. There’s great band energy here too, captured with a live club feel. Greene, who also works with the likes of Alan Parsons, is a fiery performer who’s perfect meat for a label such as Blind Pig Records."

BLUES REVUE REVIEW - November 17, 2009

WALKING IN CIRCLES has been reviewed in the latest issue of BLUES REVUE MAGAZINE. Check it out!

blues revue

"The ALASTAIR GREENE BAND has achieved an elusive result with WALKING IN CIRCLES (Riatsala Music), waxing a blues-rock album that holds appeal for traditionalists. The rhythm section never fails to swing, providing a nuanced, true-blues launch pad for Greene’s guitar, even on the aggressive reading of “Get Out of My Life, Woman.” A stinging version of “Don’t Lose Your Cool” features the harmonica of Mitch Kashmar, who guests on six tracks overall; “Merry-Go-Round” captures the melancholy of the Fleetwood Mac original. Greene’s own songs reference trademark sounds from Bo Diddley to The Meters, with “Drunk Again” a strong shuffle and “Look Out Baby” a speeding ticket waiting to happen." - Tom Hylsop
